With the painful Great Recession financial lessons upon us, why would we want to make our children (or grandchildren) learn about money the hard way just like we did? The Cognitra Money and Allowance Kit is a tool to help children learn how to manage money when they're young, so they can grow up to be financially literate adults. 

The Cognitra Money and Allowance Kit is the first product in the Beginning Money Management Series targeted to children 5-9 years old (but the kit is appropriate for children up to 12 years old). The Cognitra Money and Allowance Kit is not intended to be used by children under the age of 3. There are three (3) main pieces to the Cognitra Money and Allowance Kit: 1) Portfolio with Name Label 2) Folder with Cheat Sheets & Log 3) Envelopes with Money Category Labels.

1) Portfolio with Name Label

This is the (approx 13 1/2" x 10" x 1 1/2") poly portfolio that contains all of the Cognitra Money and Allowance Kit contents. The portfolio has a modern, see through look to it that kids are sure to love. Frosted tangerine (orange) is the only color available at the current time.   

 There is a permanent label on the front of the portfolio to write in the owner’s name.

The back of the portfolio includes a sleeve to store important papers for added convenience (Ex. Savings account statement).

2) Folder with Cheat Sheets & Log

This poly folder (approx 8 1/2" x 11") contains three (3) main pieces.Tangerine (orange) is the only color available at the current time.   

1) Instead of reading a lot of books, "cheat sheets" have been created including an Overview and the six (6) main categories of money management as follows: 1) Earn 2) Save 3) Share 4) Spend 5) Invest 6) Loan. There is an example of the first page below. Adults and kids can get started with the program quickly using this helpful information. Some families get started with the kit by using the first four money categories to make it even simpler. 

The Cognitra Money and Allowance Kit is also designed to be in sync with the Personal Finance Learning for children and adults on the Cognitra website.

2) Below is an example of a completed page for the Money and Allowance Kit Log which shows how money can be tracked by the six (6) categories (described above). The log tracks money coming in (earned) and going out by what pot of money it is going to (save, share, spend, invest, or loan). The latest balance of money for each category should match the cash in the associated envelope.

3) Ten (10) blank Money and Allowance Kit Log pages (one-sided) are included with the kit so kids can track their own money. Additional blank log pages can be copied or downloaded.

3) Envelopes with Money Category Labels

There are six (6) different colored (tangerine, grape, blueberry, lemon, lime, strawberry) poly envelopes. There is one envelope and label for each category: Earn, Save, Share, Spend, Invest, and Loan. The labels are inside a small plastic bag with the envelopes (please keep this small plastic bag away from children under age 3). The child can decide which label to put on which color envelope. The money for each category gets stored inside the appropriate envelope. Kids will be excited and encouraged managing their own money since It is easy to see the cash and coins building inside the envelope from the outside of the envelope. Each envelope has a small sleeve to store important information for that money category as an added convenience (Ex. Savings deposit receipt). The envelopes include string closures for better durability.
